Finding time to craft is an art in itself! This was not as easy as it looks but the end result is super cute. I was inspired by this website which has an in depth video of the salt dough recipe.
I made some slight variations in my version and this amount of ingredients made about 6 ornaments:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1/2 cup water
Mix and knead the dough and you may need to add just a splash more water to get the right consistency. Then roll out and cut into shapes. I just used a juicer lid to make the circle and a large star cookie cutter. I prepped this dough in advance and put each shape in its own baggie and stored in the fridge until the littles ones were in the right mood to cooperate. That is my best tip for you – prep the dough in advance and then it will be easier when it’s time to get the imprints.
Once you get the handprints/pawprints/footprints, place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for one hour. Then let them cool on wax paper overnight. Next, write their name and year if desired. (I used a black fine point sharpie). Then fill in the print with Elmer’s glue and sprinkle with glitter. Tap the ornament gently on the wax paper to shake off excess glitter. I found adding the glitter really helped the end product stand out. You can also spray them with clear lacquer to preserve them even longer. Important warning: When you hang these on the tree, be sure to put them high enough that your pet can’t reach them. I’ve read that dogs can get very sick if they eat these and even can cause death. Somehow they can still smell that these were made from flour and salt and can be very enticing.
